Raw Couture 08'

April 11th, Salt Lake Community College held a runway event showcasing their advanced fashion design students. Each student designed and sewed each of the outfits in their line that ranged from 3 - 6 outfits.

A while ago when I began working on my first installation (and still am) my mentor gave me the advice, "Do what you know". She said young artists try to start big by doing something that they really don't know anything about just to be edgey and it shows. In this show it seemed as though the students took that advice to heart. All of the items in the show were not particularly innovative or avant-garde, but they were sturdy and suited to students who are just starting to test the waters.

Jenny Vance, Floral Feminine dresses. The first outfit out gave me renewed hope for the rest of the show. She worked with silky floral prints to make feminine, clean dresses.





























Mallory Bair, Leather. Mallory's use of leather was exciting to see in a student show. Her line had a simple class act look.



































Katie Dodd, Swimwear. The truth is Katie Dodd's line of gold lame, stretch vinyl and spandex swimsuits were my favorite in the show. Not all of the designs were completely fresh but everything was fun and memorable. She wanted to stray away from the average bikini cuts and swimsuit prints and I think she succeeded. I liked her take on male swimwear and the 80's looking red and gold one piece.





























Rebbecca Burgess, Mommy and Me. Cute levels were off the radar. Rebbecca designed a line of matching mommy daughter outfits. She also surprised us with a puppy companion. Although everything was sewn immaculately and it was very smart to bring adorable things on stage and she swept the competition, none of the pieces were original or eye catching.







































Jordan Halverson, 60's futuristic. Halverson's dresses are what the star trek heroines might wear to play tennis. They were short, movable and made of stretch fabrics. He made the mistake of overshadowing his line with his own outfit. Why didn't you put that in the show?


















There were several more lines but we chose the most memorable (good or bad). Overall we had fun and give our best wishes to the program and students.

Girls I do Adore.

I recently took my first trip to Tooele, UT. I have lived in this state my entire life but I've never traveled to the mysterious land of Tooele. I decided to check the place out and thought my best chance for a photo would be the D.I. I was wandering through the women's section when I saw her. The women I beheld was a one item knock out. You know when one item makes the whole outfit, like BAM!



IDA is wearing a bronze leather trench coat. She has it gently tied around her frame. This jacket is classic. It can be worn indoors or in mild weather as well as in the cold winter.

Here is our conversation. It was in both Spanish and English but I've translated it to English.

M.E.T. – Oh, Hi. I love your jacket you look really good in it. I run a fashion blog and I was wondering if I could take your photo?

IDA – Oh you like my jacket? Do you want it?

Husband – Yea, let her have it.

M.E.T – No, no umm.. No I just want to take your photo. Is that ok?

IDA – Of course.

M.E.T. – So, where did you get your jacket?

IDA – Here, I buy everything here I have so many crazy clothes that I bought here.

M.E.T – What are you looking for today?

IDA – Braziers, I found this nice black one.

IDA – Can you mail me those pictures?

M.E.T – Okay, do you want to give me your address?

Husband – You better just come to the house.

IDA – Have you had lunch yet? You should just come over.

M.E.T. – Oh … Well I'm actually working right now but that's very nice. I can email you those pictures.

IDA – We don't have a computer. Can you just mail those? Are you sure you don't want to come over?

M.E.T – I don't think I can, but I will mail them to you.

IDA – Ok, thanks.

M.E.T – Thank You for wearing that great jacket.

Husband – You should just give her the jacket.

IDA – I don't think it will fit her.

M.E.T. – No, no I don't want the jacket I think it's meant for you to have the jacket.

IDA – I like you necklace… Can I have it?

M.E.T – This green one? Well … Yea, OK. I think this is a perfect exchange, ok here.

It's moments like this that having a blog that makes you interact with others is truly worth it.

Terror Since The Public School Era.

I see Taki on the train a couple times a week. I’ve always wanted to
take a photo because he is always stylish and finally had the chance
this week. Taki is a foreign exchange student from Japan. He has been
living in the U.S. for 5 years, but when he arrived here he didn’t
bring very many clothes with him. He is really creative with layers
and mixing and matching. Taki’s clothes are all from Japan. He said
his philosophy for shopping is “if its cheap, [he] buys it,” but he
also doesn’t mind spending a little extra on jeans. Jeans are Taki’s
fashion obsession -- he feels like he can never have enough. He said
his next new jeans may be a pair of True Religions (to each his own).

Taki’s outfit has a very urban feel, he has the hat and the print
hoodie and the fly sneakers. The added bonus to this outfit is the
curious leather pouch on his hip. He uses it to carry things he
doesn’t want to lose.



P.S. I recently went to Ogden and looked around for kids to
photograph. I was not successful, I'm sure they are there, somewhere. Where do kids hang outside of SLC proper? SLCpomp wants to know where the hip kids from Logan to Mexican Hat (and anywhere in between) spend their time.
